City hosts workshop on gender-based violence

The City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development (CACD) Department hosted a two-day educational workshop on gender-based violence in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay. The event attracted 18 community members – both men and women.
The workshop focused on identifying early warning signs of gender-based violence and abuse, and what to do to stop it.
Topics discussed included identifying existing gender roles, stereotypes, as well as the intersection between gender and power.
Facilitators also led discussions on various forms of gender-based violence, the legislative framework and the available support services.
Participants had the opportunity to explain how this behaviour manifests in their homes and communities.
'We are glad to see such interest and participation in these types of interventions. Education, awareness and honest conversations are all part of the change, because if we know more, we can do more and do better. We hope that those who participated in the workshop will share the knowledge with their respective communities and assist those in need,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
